Center for Inquiry

Tell Your Senators to Vote For The Employment Nondiscrimination Act (ENDA)!

Right now, in 29 states employees can be terminated for their sexual orientation. In 33 states they can be dismissed for their gender identity. This situation is unacceptable.

Like you, the Center for Inquiry believes firmly in the basic dignity and fundamental rights of every human being, regardless of sexual orientation or how they choose to identify. That is why we support the Employment Nondiscrimination Act (ENDA), which would prevent private employers from discriminating against LGBT individuals no matter what state they live in. Now, we need your help to see it through.

The good news is that this past Tuesday, the Senate voted to proceed to debate on ENDA, with all 52 Democrats, both Independents, and 7 Republicans voting to move the bill forward.

While CFI takes issue with the religious exemption included in ENDA (a disappointing and unnecessary pander to religion), ENDA represents a historic opportunity to expand protections against discrimination to LGBT individuals. CFI will continue to press to limit any exemptions that would allow employers to use religious grounds to discriminate in the workplace, and we will work to pressure members of the House of Representatives to put ENDA up for a vote, despite the opposition of the GOP leadership.

But first we have to get it through the Senate once and for all, and you can help pass this landmark legislation!

Take this opportunity right now to tell your Senators that you believe LGBT Americans deserve protection from unfair dismissal and discrimination, and to demand they support the passage of ENDA.
