“It is a clash between a mentality that belongs to the Middle Ages and another that belongs to the twenty-first century.”

wafasultanWith those words spoken on al-Jazeera television, human rights activist Wafa Sultan took to task the Islamic world for its barbaric and violent attitudes toward women and non-Muslims, and its adherence to ancient superstition. Her courageous and impassioned plea lit up the Internet, and its video clip has been viewed over twenty million times. In 2006, Time magazine named her one of the world’s 100 Most Influential People, and she is author of the book A God Who Hates.

Wafa Sultan will deliver an address on women in Islam at the Center for Inquiry’s Women in Secularism conference—May 18-20 in Arlington, Virginia—and will take part in a panel discussion on the necessity of freedom from religion for women along with Greta Christina, Elizabeth Cornwell, and Annie Laurie Gaylor. These are just part of the conference’s many enriching and exciting talks.
